From job work to your own label
Most Tiruppur units grew by knitting, dyeing and stitching for other people’s brands. More of them now sell under their own label, on marketplaces, through wholesalers or straight to buyers abroad. The moment your name goes on a neck label, hang tag or carton, it needs protecting.
If you make garments for a buyer’s brand, that brand belongs to the buyer. What you can protect is your own label and, if you like, the name of your manufacturing service. Mixing the two up is one of the most common mistakes we see.
Knitwear names also get copied fast within the cluster. A search before you print labels shows whether a similar name is already filed in clothing.
What to file for a knitwear business
| Class 25 | Knitted garments, T-shirts, polo shirts, innerwear, socks, kidswear |
| Class 24 | Knitted and woven fabrics, if you sell fabric under the brand |
| Class 35 | Wholesale, export trading and online store services under your brand |
| Class 40 | Knitting, dyeing or printing done for other companies (job work) |
Most knitwear labels start with class 25. Add class 40 only if your manufacturing service itself carries a brand name. Each class has its own government fee.

Knitwear-specific points we check before filing
Sound-alike names matter
In Rupa & Co. v. Dawn Mills (Gujarat High Court, 1998), “DON” was held too close to “DAWN” for hosiery because the two sound alike. We check how your name sounds, not just how it is spelt.
Your label, not your buyer’s
Garments made for a buyer’s brand are protected by the buyer. File your own label name, and your company name only if you use it as a brand.
Common words cannot be owned
Words like Knit, Cotton, Tex, Fab, Wear or Kids describe the goods. Your protection comes from the distinctive part of the name or from a logo.
Selling abroad?
An Indian trademark protects you in India only. Through the Madrid system, your Indian application can be the base for filings in the US, UK, EU and other markets.
Tamil and English versions
If you use the name in Tamil script too, it can be filed with a transliteration and English meaning. Filing both versions, or a logo carrying both, gives wider protection.
™ now, ® later
You can use ™ on labels and tags from the day you get your application number. Use ® only after registration; using it earlier is an offence under the Trade Marks Act.

Questions from Tiruppur knitwear businesses
Which class should a T-shirt or innerwear brand file in?
Class 25 covers T-shirts, innerwear, socks and other clothing. Add class 35 if you sell through your own website or store under the brand, and class 24 if you also sell fabric. We confirm the classes in the free check.
I manufacture for other brands. Do I need a trademark?
Not for your buyers’ brands; they own those. You need one for your own label, and for your company name if customers know your service by it (class 40).
Can I protect my brand in export markets?
Yes. Once your Indian application is filed, it can be used as the base for an international application under the Madrid system, designating the countries you sell to. We quote that separately.
Which Registry office handles Tiruppur?
Tamil Nadu falls under the Trade Marks Registry office in Chennai. We file online, so you never need to visit.
What does it cost in total?
For one class, as an individual or micro/small enterprise: Search + File ₹1,299 + ₹234 GST + ₹4,500 government fee = ₹6,033. Other companies, including medium enterprises, pay a ₹9,000 government fee per class. You get the full total in writing before you pay.
Can I register a Tamil brand name?
Yes. Marks in Tamil or any Indian script are accepted, with a transliteration and translation in the application. We prepare both.
